Frequently Asked Questions About TRT
Q: What is TRT?
A: TRT, or Testosterone Replacement Therapy, is a treatment that doctors give to males with testosterone deficiency, aka “Low T” or “Low Testosterone” who show symptoms of hypogonadism.
Q: What are the symptoms of low testosterone?
A: From the age of 30 and up, men lose about one percent of their testosterone each year. Their levels continue to decrease throughout their lives. The symptoms of low testosterone can vary, depending on the age when it occurs. Some of the symptoms of low testosterone include:
- Infertility
- Decrease in amount of semen during ejaculation
- Decrease in sexual desire
- Fatigue or low energy
- Decrease in sexual function
- Erectile dysfunction
- Hair loss
- Decreased muscle mass
- Osteoporosis
Q: What are the benefits of TRT?
- Increased sex drive
- Improved mood
- Better memory
- Muscle growth
- Improved strength
- Increased endurance
- Burn fat faster
- Improved bone mass
- Increased red blood cell production
- Improved erectile function
- Enhanced libido
- Hair & Collagen growth
Q: What is a “normal” testosterone level?
A: There is much debate as to what a “normal” testosterone level is, however, the National Institute of Health indicates that readings between 300 and 1,000 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter) would be considered normal. These levels are not broken down by age, therefore, normal for an 80 year old man and a 30 year old man might vary. In addition, laboratories might use different measurements, causing a variance in what is considered a normal or average range.
Q: How long does it take TRT to work?
A: TRT is a long-term investment in your health, and one of the great things about it is that many people will notice a difference within a few days. For others it can take a few weeks to start seeing results. In the long-term, you will see a cumulative effect in terms of wellbeing, results and how you feel.
Q: Does my insurance cover TRT?
A: The simplest answer is: sometimes. The insurance companies are more stringent with the qualifying factors for TRT than necessary. For example, they frequently require 2 blood samples to confirm your lab results. They also do not cover the cost of TRT unless it is lower than 300 ng/dl. At Select Spine & Sports Medicine, we take the hassle (insurance) out of the equation. We only 1 lab is required prior to starting TRT and we aim to optimize your testosterone levels for your age range, regardless of your initial lab results. So for example: You go the insurance rout, you go for the initial consultation, take 2 labs, go in for the follow up, only to find out your testosterone levels are higher than 300 ng/dl, therefore you do not qualify for insurance coverage. Compared that to the simplicity of our protocol: 1 lab, 1 consult, start optimizing your testosterone! It really can be that simple! If you wish to bill your own insurance, we will provide you with the information to do so.
Q: How much does TRT cost?
A: We have a very simple plan: $120 per month for testosterone, supplies, shipping, all follow up labs and all follow up consults with your provider.
